WASHED COCO CHIPS

Washed Coco Chips are a specific type of horticultural growing medium made from chunks of coconut husk. They are a component of coco coir, alongside finer materials like coco peat (pith) and coco fiber.

Here’s a breakdown of what they are and what they’re used for:

  1. What coco chips:

    • Coco chips is made by chunking coconuts husk into small pcs.

    • Size: Chunky, irregularly shaped pieces (typically ranging from about 0.5 cm to 2.5 cm / 0.2″ to 1″ in size). Th

    • “Washed” Process: Raw coconut husks contain high levels of salts (like sodium and potassium chloride) and tannins (which can inhibit plant growth). “Washed” means the chips have undergone thorough rinsing or soaking processes to remove these soluble salts and tannins, making them safe and suitable for plant growth. High-quality washed chips may also be “buffered” with calcium to counteract any remaining potassium or sodium and stabilize the pH.

  2. Key Properties of coco chips:

    • Excellent Aeration & Drainage: Their large, chunky structure creates significant air pockets within the growing medium. This is their primary benefit.

    • Good Water Retention: While they drain freely, the fibrous nature of the chips themselves can hold some moisture on their surfaces and within their structure, releasing it gradually to plant roots.

    • Slow to Decompose: They break down much slower than finer coco peat or organic matter like bark, providing long-lasting structure.

    • Inert & Sterile (when washed): After proper washing, they contain minimal nutrients and are free from weed seeds and pathogens.

    • Sustainable & Renewable: Made from a waste product (coconut husks).

    • Slightly Acidic to Neutral pH: Once washed and buffered, they tend to be in a good range (around 5.5 – 6.5) for most plants.

    • Potting Mix Amendment (Aeration & Drainage Booster): This is the most common use. Washed coco chips are mixed into potting soils (especially those for container plants, houseplants, orchids, epiphytes, aroids) to:

      • Prevent soil compaction.

      • Drastically improve drainage, reducing the risk of root rot.

      • Increase oxygen availability to roots.

      • Provide long-lasting structure. They are often used as a more sustainable alternative to perlite or pine bark fines.

    • Orchid Growing Medium (Primary Component):

    • Hydroponics & Semi-Hydroponics:

    • Epiphytic Plants & Aroids:

    • Soil Amendment for Garden Beds:

    • Mulch:
