Using coco peat brick in your garden is very simple, you just follow these those steps:
Reconstituting the Bricks
Coconut coir or peat comes in compressed form, it expands and increases up to 5 or 6 times in volume after it’s reconstituted. Only break off the amount you’re planning to use.
- Break apart a brick in parts and throw it in a large bucket. Add enough amount of water to saturate the brick.
- Allow the dry coco peat to sit in the water for some time so that it can become loose and absorb the water.
- Stir and fluff coco peat with a garden trowel after 10-15 minutes, add more water if it looks dry. Stop, if it’s loose.
- Stir and fluff again after a few minutes to make sure all of it has been moistened, add more water if it’s not loose yet. Once you see the moist and loose coco peat, it is ready to use in the garden.
Can We use only coco peat for growing plants?
Yes, we can use only coco peat for planting. Coco peat soil compared to regular soil is that it is less attractive to pests that might damage plants or become a nuisance. It is perfectly acceptable to use coco peat alone in container gardening.
You could also just mix coir with gardening soil as mentioned above, following the same 1-part to 3-parts ratio. If you do this, apply a layer of pure coco peat over the mixture as well because planter pots dry out more easily than ground plants.
Coco peat is popular as both a soil additive and a total soil replacement for many types of plants and growing styles, from greenhouses and outdoor gardens to indoor planters. When given a choice between coco peat and peat moss, coco peat offers many advantages and is better for the environment.
