  1. High Salt Content: Raw coco peat often contains high levels of salts due to its exposure to saline water during production.
  2. Cation Exchange: Coco peat naturally has a high cation exchange capacity (CEC), which means it holds onto salts like sodium and potassium. These salts can displace essential nutrients like calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) needed by plants.

  1. Washing:
    • Raw coco peat is soaked and flushed with fresh water to remove excess salts.
    • Electrical conductivity (EC) levels are monitored to ensure salts are adequately reduced.
  1. Buffering:
    • Coco peat is treated with a calcium nitrate (Ca(NO₃)₂) solution or similar buffering agents.
    • The calcium displaces sodium and potassium ions from the cation exchange sites.
    • The displaced salts are washed out with water.
  1. Drying:
    • After treatment, the coco peat is dried to reduce moisture content for packaging and transport.
