Coco peat is becoming one of best coir growing medium now thanks to its light, nutrition, water retention, biodegradability and affordability.

How to make coco peat? 

1. Collecting coco husks:

   

   • Obtain fresh or dried coconut husks. These are the fibrous outer shells of the coconut.Soak the husks in water for several hours or overnight. This softens the fibers and makes it easier to separate the pith from the fibers.
2. Extracting coco peat from coco husk:

   

   • Use a hammer or mallet to break the husks into smaller pieces. The goal is to extract the fine coir pith from the tougher coir fibers.
   • You can also use a machine specifically designed for this purpose if you have access to one.
3. Washing coco peat:  Coco peat have to be used in order to odd tannin and lignin out. The coco peat is washed until the target EC, pH

   

4.  Drying coco peat:

   

   • Spread the collected pith out in the sun to dry. It needs to be completely dry before use or storage to prevent mold and bacterial growth.
5. Pressing and packaging

   

    

• • Once dried, store the coco peat in a dry, cool place. It can be compressed into blocks or kept loose, depending on your needs.

Optional: Buffering coco peat.

• Buffering: To improve the quality, you can buffer the coco peat by soaking it in a calcium nitrate solution to reduce its sodium and potassium levels.

Usage of coco peat:

• Hydrate Before Use: Coco peat can be quite dry, so it’s important to dehydrate it before use in gardening or as a soil amendment. Add water until it expands and becomes fluffy.
